The short answer

Lengteng Wildlife Sanctuary: what visitors should know first

Only for committed birders and trekkers. Facilities and access details are thin, so go with a local contact and the forest department's permission, in October to March. Most visitors will find Murlen easier.

History and context

The story behind Lengteng Wildlife Sanctuary

Wikipedia records that Lengteng was declared a protected area in 1999 and a wildlife sanctuary on 31 May 2001. The same article lists tropical evergreen and subtropical montane vegetation, with notable birds and mammals, and mentions the end of hunting for New Year feasts at Kawlbem in 2010.

Why it matters

Why Lengteng Wildlife Sanctuary is worth your time

Lengteng was declared a protected area in 1999 and became a national wildlife sanctuary on 31 May 2001, according to Wikipedia. It covers about 120 sq km and is of conservation interest mainly for rare birds and montane forest.

It also shows how hunting culture is changing. Wikipedia notes that hunting of wild animals for New Year feasts in the village of Kawlbem was stopped in 2010 under government pressure. For visitors, it is a reminder that these forests are protected places, not tourist attractions.

Highlights

What not to miss

  1. 01

    Second-highest peak

The sanctuary contains Mizoram's second-highest peak, though reaching it is a serious trek.

  2. 02

    Rare birds

Birders look for grey sibia, white-naped yuhina and, reportedly, Blyth's tragopan.

  3. 03

    Quiet forest

Few visitors come here, so expect silence rather than services.

How to experience it

Lengteng is for people who already know why they are going. It lies north of Murlen National Park and near the Myanmar border, with altitudes from about 400 to 2,141 m. Wikipedia describes dense evergreen and semi-evergreen forest and notes the sanctuary contains the second-highest peak in Mizoram. Public information on access is thin, so do not turn up unannounced.

Talk to a local forest guide in Champhai. Ask about the road, where to stay and whether a recent survey or trail is open. Birders should pack binoculars and rain gear. Species reported here include dark-rumped swift, grey sibia, Mrs Hume's pheasant, grey peacock-pheasant and white-naped yuhina, and a 2011 survey reported Blyth's tragopan.

Go between October and March, start before dawn, and be ready for a long day. Do not expect to see large mammals; tiger and leopard are recorded, but sightings are rare and the forest is dense.

Plan with confidence

Small decisions that make the visit easier.
