Plan 01
1 day in Chandigarh
- 01
Day 1: Rock Garden and the lake
Start with the Rock Garden in the morning—it is less crowded and the light is gentler on the sculptures. Spend two hours wandering the 12-acre site, then drive to Sukhna Lake for a late breakfast or early lunch at one of the lakeside cafés. Spend the afternoon walking the Nature Trail around the lake or resting on the promenade with a book. In the late afternoon, head to Sector 17 for the evening light, browse the shops and markets, and end with dinner at one of the restaurants facing the plaza.

Pacing
Make the plan work for everyone
- Chandigarh is one of India's easiest cities for older travellers: flat, spacious, well-designed and not congested. Walk slowly and enjoy it.
- Stay hydrated: even in winter, the sun is strong. Carry water, sunscreen and a hat. Sector parks have shaded seating every few hundred metres.
- The Rock Garden has uneven paths and steps, but the pace is slow and there is no rushing. Rest whenever you wish; there are benches throughout.
- Sukhna Lake's Nature Trail is flat and perfect for morning and evening walks. The promenade has cafés and shaded seating.
- Capitol Complex is best visited early in the morning. Park near the information booth and walk at your own pace; the buildings and grounds are spectacular at sunrise.
- Choose a hotel with lifts and good restaurant access. Sectors 5–7 and 17 are the most convenient, with many restaurants within walking distance.
