Why it matters

Why Kalka-Shimla Railway is worth your time

The Kalka-Shimla Railway was built between 1898 and 1903 as the British viceroy wanted a direct rail link to the summer capital. Engineers built it as a narrow-gauge line to save cost, and the route had to work around terrain, water and the politics of hill kingdoms. In 2008, UNESCO inscribed it as a World Heritage site, one of only a few working railways to receive that honour. It remains the oldest continuously working mountain railway in Asia.

For visitors it is a living time machine. The train, the route, the stations and the rhythm of travel have changed very little since the 1920s. Riding it connects you to how colonial and early-independent India moved across difficult terrain with ingenuity and labour. For children and seniors, it is a gentler way to experience the Himalayas than hiking or driving on narrow roads.

Plan your visit

How to experience it

Leave Chandigarh early in the morning to reach Kalka station by 7 or 8 am. The station is about an hour's drive south. Buy or confirm your ticket the night before if possible. Board the toy train, settle into your compartment and watch the landscape change as you climb. The route passes through 102 tunnels, crosses the Sutlej River, and stops at small stations like Solan, Dharampur and Barog, where monkeys often hop on and off the train.

The journey is not fast or luxurious, and that is the point. Bring a book, snacks and water. The views are best in the first two or three hours as you climb through forests. Stop at Shimla for lunch, see the Mall and Christ Church, then return on an afternoon train. The whole trip is a day, but a paced day that suits families, children and anyone fatigued by sight-seeing lists.

In winter, the route passes through occasional patches of snow and the light is soft and gentle. The train moves slowly enough that you can photograph reasonably from your window seat.

Plan with confidence

Small decisions that make the visit easier.

  • Start from Chandigarh early to catch a comfortable morning train slot
  • Book tickets in advance through IRCTC.co.in or at the station a day ahead
  • Bring snacks, water and entertainment; the journey is long and the views are best mid-journey, not constant
  • Sit facing the direction of travel and pick a window seat
  • The train is not air-conditioned; it is open and can get cold at altitude in winter or hot in summer
  • Avoid monsoon season; landslides and poor visibility are common

FAQs

How long does the Kalka-Shimla train take?

Roughly 5 hours from Kalka to Shimla. Add 1.5-2 hours for travel from Chandigarh to Kalka, so 6-7 hours for a round trip with lunch in Shimla.

Is it safe and comfortable for elderly people?

Safe yes. Comfortable depends on sitting tolerance. The seats are hard benches; if someone has back pain or hip issues, 5 hours can be difficult.

Can you see monkeys and wildlife from the train?

Yes. Monkeys are common around some stations, especially Barog and Solan. The route passes through forested hillsides where you may see birds and occasionally other animals at a distance.

What is special about this railway being UNESCO listed?

It is one of only a handful of working railways UNESCO has recognized. The engineering for a narrow-gauge line through that terrain was innovative and the route remains almost unchanged since 1903.

Do I need to book in advance?

Recommended, especially for weekend and holiday travel. You can book online at IRCTC.co.in, by phone, or at the station if seats are available.
