The short answer

Hat Kalika temple, Gangolihat: what visitors should know first

Add it if you are already making the Patal Bhuvaneshwar trip. The setting among cedar trees is calm, and the temple is a living Shakti shrine. It is not worth a separate trip from Chaukori on its own.

Plan your visit

How to experience it

Gangolihat sits on a hilltop between the Saryu and Ramganga rivers at about 1,760 m. The temple complex is surrounded by deodar cedar, and nearby, to the south-west, stand the remains of older temples and a masonry well with ancient inscriptions, according to Wikipedia. The district temples page calls it the Mahakali temple, a Shakti shrine in pine trees, and says it is 77 km from Pithoragarh.

Go at an unhurried time and join the devotees. Remove your shoes, keep voices low and follow the line towards the sanctum. A Chamunda temple is listed about 2 km away, which you can add if you have energy and a driver.

This is best as the second stop of a long day, after Patal Bhuvaneshwar, which is roughly 14 to 16 km from Gangolihat by the sources. Check the day's timings and plan to return to Chaukori before dark, since mountain roads are slow.

Plan with confidence

Visit as a guest, not a spectator.

  • Combine with Patal Bhuvaneshwar rather than visit separately
  • Dress modestly and wear easy shoes
  • Ask about the Chamunda temple if you have time
  • Start early to return to Chaukori before dark
  • Carry cash for small offerings
