Why it matters

Why Gudiyam Caves Heritage Trail is worth your time

Gudiyam is one of the oldest human sites near Chennai. Stone tools found here and in the surrounding hills show that people were living and working in this landscape in the Palaeolithic, long before any of the city's temples or forts.

The walk also shows a side of Tiruvallur district most visitors miss: dry evergreen forest, monkeys and birdlife within a couple of hours of the city. Trek Tamil Nadu runs it as a guided trail so that numbers stay small and the site is protected.

Highlights

What not to miss

  1. 01

    The rock shelter

A large natural overhang used by Stone Age people, with a long history of archaeological work.

  2. 02

    Dry evergreen forest

A low, scrubby forest type that is now rare along the Coromandel coast.

  3. 03

    Poondi reservoir

The large reservoir nearby makes a calm stop for anyone not walking.

Plan your visit

How to experience it

Book a slot on the Trek Tamil Nadu website and drive to the Gudiyam reception point, about 60 km west of Chennai near the Poondi reservoir. Groups are small, up to about 15 people, and start at 7, 8 or 9 am with a forest department guide.

The trail runs about 4.5 km each way through tropical dry evergreen forest and scrub, reaching a maximum of only about 141 m (460 ft). The ground is level to gently rolling, but it is rough underfoot and has little shade in places. Allow about four hours for the round trip and time at the shelter.

The rock shelter itself is a large overhang in the Allikulli hills. There is little on site to explain it, so read a little before you go. Carry plenty of water, a hat and sunscreen, and keep to the guide's pace.

Plan with confidence

Small decisions that make the visit easier.

  • Book a slot on the Trek Tamil Nadu website in advance
  • Arrange your own car to the Gudiyam reception point
  • Carry at least 2 litres of water per person
  • Wear closed shoes, a hat and light full-sleeve clothing
  • Carry personal medicines and photo ID
  • Take all litter back with you
