Area by area

Chettinad neighbourhoods compared

  1. 01

    Kanadukathan

Best for: Heritage stays and walking among mansions

Good to know: The best base for the village atmosphere, with several restored mansions as hotels. Roads are quiet, but most sights need a car, and some mansion rooms are upstairs. Ask about steps and the walk to the dining room.

Sights in this area: Chettinadu Mansion, Kanadukathan, Kanadukathan Palace (Raja's Palace)

Hotels we cover here: Visalam (CGH Earth), Kanadukathan

  2. 02

    Karaikudi

Best for: Town convenience, food and shopping

Good to know: Karaikudi has the antique market, handloom shops, the railway station and hotels such as The Bangala. It is busier than the villages but shortens transfers, and is a sensible base for older travellers who want hospitals and services nearby.

Sights in this area: Athangudi tile workshops, Kanadukathan Palace (Raja's Palace), Kundrakudi Shanmuganathar Temple, Pillayarpatti Karpaga Vinayagar Temple, Thirumayam Fort and rock-cut temples, Vettangudi Bird Sanctuary

Hotels we cover here: The Bangala, Karaikudi

  3. 03

    Kadiapatti and the Thirumayam side

Best for: Families wanting a pool and rural quiet

Good to know: Chidambara Vilas sits in Pudukkottai district near Thirumayam, so it suits visitors who plan to see the fort. It is a drive from Karaikudi's sights, so factor in transport time.

Hotels in Chettinad for families and seniors

  1. 01

    Chidambara Vilas, Kadiapatti

Kadiapatti village, off Thirumayam, Pudukkottai district · Resort mansion · Price band: ₹₹₹

A restored Chettinad mansion of over a century in Kadiapatti, Pudukkottai district, run by Sangam Hotels with 25 rooms, a pool and village-focused activities. It suits families who want space and a pool.

For older travellers: The property is spread across a mansion and grounds, with a pool and shaded seating. Ask which rooms have the shortest walk to dining and whether there are steps to the pool.

  2. 02

    The Bangala, Karaikudi

Karaikudi town, Chettinad · Family-run hotel · Price band: ₹₹₹

A British-style bungalow in Karaikudi, once a gentlemen's club, restored by Meenakshi Meyyappan and her family as a hotel with about 30 rooms. It is known above all for its Chettinad meals.

For older travellers: Rooms are on a family-home layout with gardens and verandahs for resting, and the town location means shorter transfers. Ask about floors and steps when booking, and say if you need a ground-floor room.

  3. 03

    Visalam (CGH Earth), Kanadukathan

Kanadukathan village, Chettinad · Heritage mansion · Price band: ₹₹₹

A restored Chettiar mansion in Kanadukathan, run by CGH Earth with 15 rooms, cooking classes, tile workshops and heritage walks. It is one of the most polished places to stay in Chettinad.

For older travellers: The house is large and rooms are spread across halls and courtyards, so distances to the restaurant can be long. Ask for a ground-floor room, check bathroom access and request a buggy or arm to the room if needed.

Before you book

What to check when booking for older travellers

  • Ask for a lift, or a ground-floor room — many heritage hotels have steps and no lift.
  • Check how far the hotel is from the sights you care about, in minutes by road, not kilometres.
  • Prefer free cancellation until close to the date, in case plans or health change.
  • Look for 24-hour reception, in-house dining and a doctor-on-call policy.
  • Read recent reviews for noise — old-city streets and wedding venues can be loud late.
