Area by area

Chiang Mai neighbourhoods compared

  1. 01

    Old City (inside the moat)

Best for: Walkers who want temples, cafes and markets at the door

Good to know: Flat, compact and full of guesthouses, boutique hotels and vegetarian cafes. Lanes can be narrow and motorbikes busy, so ask about lift access, drop-off and noise before you book.

Sights in this area: Chiang Mai City Arts and Cultural Centre, Nimmanhaemin Road (Nimman), Tha Phae Gate and Old City Moat, Wat Chedi Luang, Wat Phra Singh, Wat Phra That Doi Suthep, Wat Sri Suphan (Silver Temple), Wat Suan Dok, Wat Umong

  2. 02

    Nimmanhaemin (Nimman)

Best for: Families and older travellers who prefer cafes, malls and quiet evenings

Good to know: West of the old city and near Chiang Mai University. Good restaurants, easy ride-hailing, malls with air-conditioning and several hospitals nearby. Less atmospheric than the old city but comfortable.

  3. 03

Night Bazaar and Chang Klan Road

Best for: Shoppers and anyone who wants big hotels with lifts

Good to know: East of the old city towards the river, with larger hotels, the Night Bazaar and Indian restaurants such as Rajdarbar. Busy at night but convenient for transport.

  4. 04

    Riverside (Ping River)

Best for: Quieter stays with gardens

Good to know: Calmer stays on the east bank, often with restaurants and garden settings. You will rely on cars or tuk-tuks to reach the old city temples.

Before you book

What to check when booking for older travellers

  • Ask for a lift, or a ground-floor room — many heritage hotels have steps and no lift.
  • Check how far the hotel is from the sights you care about, in minutes by road, not kilometres.
  • Prefer free cancellation until close to the date, in case plans or health change.
  • Look for 24-hour reception, in-house dining and a doctor-on-call policy.
  • Read recent reviews for noise — old-city streets and wedding venues can be loud late.
