Why it matters

Why Doi Tung Royal Villa and Mae Fah Luang Garden is worth your time

The Princess Mother encouraged reforestation of these hills and helped fight the opium trade, after which many hill tribe farmers switched from poppies to other crops. The Mae Fah Luang Foundation's Doi Tung Development Project, begun in 1988, is one of the best-known examples of that effort, and the foundation reports forest cover on the project area rising from 42 per cent to over 90 per cent.

That makes Doi Tung more than a pretty hill. It is a place where visitors can see how a former opium-growing area was changed within living memory, and where products from the foundation, such as coffee and handicrafts, now support local livelihoods.

Plan your visit

How to experience it

Plan the day as a loop in the hills. Doi Tung rises to 1,389 metres near the Myanmar border, and the road climbs steeply, so the first thing you will notice is the cooler air. Most visitors take a car with driver from Chiang Rai and leave in the morning.

The Doi Tung Royal Villa was built as the summer home of Princess Mother Srinagarindra and now houses a museum about her work to improve life for local hill tribes. Below it, the Mae Fah Luang Garden is a botanical park where flowers and plants grow among rock formations. Allow time for both, with a rest between them.

At the top of the hill is Wat Phra That Doi Tung, an important pilgrimage temple that, according to chronicles, dates to 911. Dress modestly there. If you want lunch, plan it at one of the cafes run by the Doi Tung brand, which is part of the foundation's work; check current hours before you go.

Plan with confidence

Small decisions that make the visit easier.

  • Book a car with driver for the day
  • Carry a light layer for the hills
  • Check villa and garden hours
