The short answer
Lu Lam Restaurant: what visitors should know first
Go if you want a sit-down northern Thai meal by the river and eat pork or other meat. It is not a vegetarian kitchen, and it sits outside the centre, so plan a taxi or songthaew there and back, and confirm opening hours first.

Why it matters
Why Lu Lam Restaurant is worth your time
Chiang Rai has plenty of tourist cafes, but fewer places where visitors can sit on a river terrace and eat the cooking of the north in the way local families do. Lu Lam is named by two separate guides we opened, The Thaiger and Eating Thai Food, and the second describes the pork curry, minced pork salad and river setting from a real meal, which makes it a useful anchor for a first northern Thai dinner.
It will not suit everyone. The dishes we found are built on pork, crab juice and dried fish, and the restaurant also serves a traditional pig's blood soup, so strict vegetarians should choose Tamachat or Boonsita instead. Reviews are mixed on service speed, which is worth knowing if you are travelling with someone who tires easily. Treat details as a starting point and check with the restaurant before you travel.

How to experience it
Take a taxi or a songthaew from the town centre, since the restaurant lies across the highway on Kwae Wai Road, by the Kok River. Ask for the shaded tables along the water if the weather is dry; there are also other dining room sections if it is hot or wet. The review we read says the Thai menu has roughly ten times as many dishes as the English one, so ask staff what is good rather than only reading the short English list.
The dishes named by the sources are gaeng hang lay, a northern Thai pork curry, lab moo khua, a spiced minced pork salad with crispy shallots and lime leaf, nam prik nam boo, a chilli dip served with boiled vegetables, and a bamboo shoot curry with dried salted fish. Sai ua, the northern sausage, has also been photographed here. Another guide lists a mushroom curry and jackfruit salad with fried pig skin. Some dishes are very spicy, so tell the staff if you want them milder. Every meal reportedly comes with a basket of fresh vegetables and herbs.
For older travellers, go at lunch or in the cooler early evening, order two or three shared plates with rice, and allow time, because one review mentions slow service on busy days.
