Why it matters

Why Wat Phra Kaew, Chiang Rai is worth your time

The temple began as Wat Pa Ya. Wikipedia records that in 1434 lightning struck its octagonal chedi, revealing an image under stucco; when the stucco flaked away it exposed a green stone image, the Emerald Buddha (Phra Kaew Morakot), and the temple was renamed.

That story is why the temple matters to the city. It ties Chiang Rai to the history of one of Thailand's best-known Buddha images, and gives the town a historic religious centre beside its newer art sights.

Plan your visit

How to experience it

Begin at the main ubosot, built in 1890 in Chiang Saen style. It houses a brass and copper Buddha called Phra Jao Lan Thong, believed to be about 700 years old and moved here in 1961. Take your time at the doorway and observe how worshippers behave before going in.

Next find the Haw Phra Yok, the hall of the jade Buddha. Carved in China from Canadian jade, it was commissioned in 1990 to honour the Princess Mother's 90th birthday and installed in 1991. It is the most visible modern addition to an old site.

Finish at the community museum, which shows Lanna religious art with labels in Thai, English and the Lanna script. It is small but well organised, free, and useful for context before you see temples elsewhere in the region. It is also a good place to sit and cool off.

Plan with confidence

Visit as a guest, not a spectator.
