How to experience it

Plan a morning drive of roughly 45 minutes from Chidambaram. Wikipedia places the temple about 27 km from the town, about 13 km from Mayiladuthurai and about 7 km from Sirkazhi. Arrive early to avoid the queues.

The main deity is Shiva as Vaidyanathar, the healing god, with the goddess Thaiyalnayaki. A shrine to Angaraka, the Mars deity of the Navagraha, stands near the eastern gateway. Murugan is worshipped in the first precinct as Muthukumara Swamy. The Siddhamirtham tank is within the complex, and devotees traditionally bathe in it before worship.

Follow the instructions of staff, and be careful on wet stone around the tank. Combine the trip with Chidambaram or with the Pichavaram boat ride on another day.
