Plan 01
1 day in Chikmagalur
- 01
Day 1: Coffee plantations and a sunset viewpoint
Spend the morning on a private estate tour: walk through the rows, see the old processing house, talk to workers and the estate manager if time allows. Have lunch at the hotel or a small town restaurant. In the late afternoon, drive to a nearby viewpoint such as Mullayanagiri base or a local coffee-haunt spot, watch the light change over the hills and return to town for an early dinner. If energy allows, a brief visit to the market or a local temple in the evening.
Plan 02
2 days in Chikmagalur
- 01
Day 1: Town and plantations
Start with breakfast, then take a car tour of 2–3 working estates. See the monsoon-dependent landscape, taste coffee at a processing unit or cafe and chat with the estate owners about the crop, pests and climate change. Return to town for lunch and an afternoon rest. In the late afternoon, walk through the town bazaar, visit the old market, look for coffee shops and local snacks. End with dinner.
- 02
Day 2: Mullayanagiri trek and mist walks
Leave before dawn for Mullayanagiri; the trek to the peak takes about 2–2.5 hours. Older or less mobile visitors can stop partway up and still get views of the mist-filled valleys. Breakfast at the top if you've started early. Descend slowly and have lunch back in town. Afternoon: rest and visit a local temple such as Harihara temple, or take a gentle walk through a nearby coffee estate. Dinner and early rest for travel next day.

Plan 03
3 days in Chikmagalur
- 01
Day 1: Plantations and evening light
Morning estate tour, focusing on shade-grown coffee and the biodiversity: watch for birds in the canopy and ask about the native trees mixed with coffee. Return for lunch and a long rest. Late afternoon: drive to a local waterfall or forest edge for a short walk and sunset light, then return for dinner in town.
- 02
Day 2: High-altitude trek and village immersion
Pre-dawn start for Mullayanagiri. The trek is steep but doable for fit seniors if you go slowly; less mobile visitors can hire porters or stop partway. Views over the Western Ghats and Deccan plains. Descend for a late lunch. Afternoon: visit Baba Budangiri caves and the small temple there, or explore a nearby village with your driver to see how estate workers and farmers live. Return for dinner.
- 03
Day 3: Coffee processing, temples and departure
Visit a coffee-processing unit or drying yard to see the post-harvest work: sorting, pulping, drying. Many estates allow morning visits; book through your hotel. Late morning: visit Harihara temple or another local shrine, then have lunch. Afternoon: gentle drive through more plantations or along a river valley if energy allows, otherwise rest at the hotel. Depart for the airport or next destination in late afternoon.

Pacing
Make the plan work for everyone
- Mullayanagiri is best climbed at a slow pace, starting before dawn to reach the top in cool hours and avoid midday heat. Hire a porter if you have any doubt about your knees or stamina.
- The altitude (1,200 m) is gentle but may cause mild headaches or fatigue on arrival if you have underlying heart or lung issues. Spend the first day slowly and consult your doctor before the trip.
- Car journeys involve winding uphill roads. If you are prone to motion sickness, sit in front, ask the driver to go slowly, and take a motion-sickness tablet beforehand.
- Estate roads are rough and may be waterlogged in monsoon. Choose hotels that are easily accessible; confirm car entry and drop-off before booking.
- Hospitals are in Chikmagalur town. There are no urgent care facilities in remote estate areas, so plan sightseeing for mornings when help is nearby.
- Restaurants are simple; food can be unfamiliar. Carry snacks you like, and eat early (by 7–8 pm) as many places close.
