History and context
The story behind Gulbarga Fort
The fort was reportedly first built by a Hindu ruler, Raja Gulchand, and greatly enlarged in 1347 by Ala-ud-Din Bahman Shah. Gulbarga was the Bahmani capital until 1424, when it moved to Bidar. Yusuf Adil Shah rebuilt the fort after the 1565 Battle of Talikota.
The Jama Masjid inside the fort dates from 1367.

Why it matters
Why Gulbarga Fort is worth your time
Gulbarga was the capital of the Bahmani Sultanate until 1424, when the capital moved to Bidar, and this fort was its headquarters. It was greatly enlarged in 1347 by Ala-ud-Din Bahman Shah and rebuilt by Yusuf Adil Shah after the 1565 Battle of Talikota.
Seeing Gulbarga and Bidar together shows how the Bahmani rulers shifted their capital within the Deccan and how their architecture developed. For a trip based on Chincholi's nature, it adds a historical dimension.

How to experience it
Gulbarga Fort sits in the middle of Kalaburagi city, so the approach is through ordinary streets and then suddenly walls and a moat. The fort covers about 57 acres with a perimeter of roughly 3 km and a moat about 30 feet wide. A double line of fortification with 15 towers surrounds the site.
Inside, the Jama Masjid, built in 1367, is the main reason to come. It is Persian in style and said to be modelled on the Great Mosque of Cordoba in Spain, and unusually it has no open courtyard: passageways surround the prayer hall under domes and arches. Take time to look at the arches and the way light moves through the aisles.
The fort also holds 26 large guns, each about 8 m long and well preserved, along the walls and bastions. Allow time to walk the ramparts if the heat allows, and carry water. Because the drive from Chincholi is long, treat this as a full day trip or add it to a Kalaburagi visit.
Plan with confidence
Small decisions that make the visit easier.
