The short answer

Dera Baba Vadbhag Singh, Mairi: what visitors should know first

Go only outside the fair, unless you want a very large crowd. It is a local pilgrimage place in Una district. Check access, parking and timings with the local administration or temple, because the fair period brings heavy restrictions.

History and context

The story behind Dera Baba Vadbhag Singh, Mairi

Press accounts say Baba Vadbhag Singh fled to the forests of the Amb area during an Afghan invasion and later settled at Mairi, and that he overcame a local spirit who then pledged to protect the valley. The shrine's big annual fair runs around Holi.

Details vary between sources, and we could not verify exact dates for the dera's founding.

Why it matters

Why Dera Baba Vadbhag Singh, Mairi is worth your time

The shrine is a gathering point for Punjab and Himachal devotees, and the fair draws pilgrims in the hundreds of thousands. It shows how multi-faith the pilgrimage landscape of Una district is, sitting alongside the Hindu temples around Chintpurni and listed by the trust among temples in the district.

The local belief that the Charan Ganga cures illness is the reason many families bring relatives here, and the long fair is a major regional event.

Plan your visit

How to experience it

This is the district's best-known Sikh pilgrimage and a different kind of visit from Chintpurni. The shrine is at Mairi village, associated with Baba Vadbhag Singh, a descendant of Dhir Mai and heir to the Sodhi gaddi of Kartarpur according to press accounts. Many visitors follow darshan with a dip in the Charan Ganga stream, a tributary of the Swan.

The fair around Holi is the main event. One press report described a fair running from 17 to 28 March with about 10 lakh devotees expected, and noted that goods carriers were barred from carrying people over the district border. Hill roads and crowds make accidents a real risk, so heed all police instructions.

Outside fair dates, treat it as a quiet visit: cover your head, remove shoes, accept the langar if it is offered and keep a calm pace. If you are travelling with seniors, check conditions locally before going.

Plan with confidence

Visit as a guest, not a spectator.

  • Avoid the fair unless you are prepared for very heavy crowds
  • Cover your head and remove footwear
  • Check access and parking with the local administration
  • Travel only in buses or passenger vehicles during the fair
