Why it matters
Why Pong Dam Wetland is worth your time
Pong was the first wetland in Himachal Pradesh to receive Ramsar protection, in 2002. The dam, completed in 1974, created the lake called Maharana Pratap Sagar, which became a major bird sanctuary.
For visitors, it offers a different kind of rest from the temple circuit. In winter, birds arrive from the north, with counts above a lakh in peak years according to district records, and the open water gives a calm landscape.

How to experience it
This is not a pilgrimage site, but the trust itself lists it among the nearby places. The reservoir on the Beas river is huge, covering about 125 sq km at its summer minimum and about 220 sq km in the monsoon, so you need to choose an access point. Nagrota Surian is described as the nearest access point, and Khatiyar as a place for boating and water sports. The trust gives the distance from Chintpurni as about 20 km west, but you should confirm by road with your driver.
The best months are October to March, when more than 220 migratory and resident species are recorded, including black-headed gulls, brahminy ducks and bar-headed geese. Early morning is best, and binoculars make a difference.
Bring a hat, water and a flask, since facilities can be thin. If you do not care about birds, the lake still offers a quiet change of scene after temple queues, but it is not essential to a Chintpurni trip.
