How to reach Chitkul by air

The nearest airport is Shimla (SLV), roughly 250 km away by road, which means 8 hours or more of driving. Chandigarh (IXC) is about 345 km away. Flights into Shimla are limited, so check current schedules.

How to reach Chitkul by train

There is no railway in Kinnaur. The usual railheads are Shimla (SML) and Kalka (KLK), followed by a long road journey up the Sutlej valley and then into the Baspa valley.

How to reach Chitkul by road

The usual route follows NH5 (the Hindustan-Tibet road) through Narkanda, Rampur and Tapri to Karcham, then turns up the Baspa valley through Sangla and Rakchham to Chitkul. HRTC and private buses serve parts of the route; check timetables locally.

Getting around Chitkul

The village is small and best covered on foot. Taxis and shared cars run between Sangla and Chitkul, and a few buses go each way daily. The upper road can be rough, and snow blocks it for much of winter.

For parents and senior travellers

Easy transfers to and in Chitkul

  • The road is long and winding with sharp drops. Use an experienced local driver, travel in daylight and break the journey at Rakchham.
  • The village itself is gentle underfoot, but lanes are uneven and can be icy in spring and autumn mornings. Carry a walking stick and wear shoes with grip.
  • Medical help is limited. Carry regular medicines and a basic kit; the nearest larger facilities are lower in the valley or in Reckong Peo.
  • Plan for no signal and no ATM. Share your itinerary with someone at home and carry enough cash.
  • Ask the airline or railway for wheelchair or porter assistance when you book, not on the day.
  • Pre-book the pickup from the airport or station, so nobody has to negotiate with drivers after a long journey.
  • Choose arrivals in daylight where you can, and keep the first afternoon free to rest.
