The short answer

Chandrashila Summit: what visitors should know first

Go only if you are fit and have the morning free. It is a steep extra climb past Tungnath, rewarded on clear days with a very wide view. Skip it, without regret, in cloud or if altitude is already tiring.

History and context

The story behind Chandrashila Summit

The summit is accessible only on foot, with Chopta as the usual base. A tiny shrine marks the top.

Why it matters

Why Chandrashila Summit is worth your time

The name means moon stone. Local stories link the summit with the god Rama, who is said to have meditated here after defeating Ravana, and with the moon, Chandra, who is also said to have performed penance here. These are traditions rather than documented history.

Practically, the summit became one of Garhwal's best known short treks because it offers a long Himalayan panorama for a relatively modest walk. Its popularity is also why the surrounding meadows now carry rules and a pressure to leave no waste behind.

Highlights

What not to miss

  1. 01

    The ridge-top panorama

On a clear day the Garhwal crest unfolds in a long line of white peaks.

  2. 02

    Sunrise light

Early light colours the high snowfields before the valleys wake.

  3. 03

    A bird's-eye of Deoria Tal

On a clear day, the lake appears as a tiny patch far below.

Plan your visit

How to experience it

Plan Chandrashila as an extension of the Tungnath walk, not a separate outing. Reach Tungnath early, then continue up the ridge behind the temple for roughly another 1.5 km. The path steepens and the vegetation drops away to open grass and rock. Wind picks up near the top, so carry a windproof layer and gloves even in sunshine.

Sunrise is the popular time, which means a pre-dawn start from Chopta with a torch. That is only sensible if you are fit and have good footwear. A mid-morning visit is quieter, but haze or cloud often hides the far peaks by then. From the summit, trekkers point out Nanda Devi, Trisul and Chaukhamba, and on very clear days Deoria Tal can be seen far below.

Do not linger too long at the top. Descend to Tungnath for tea, then continue down to Chopta before afternoon cloud and weather set in.

Plan with confidence

Small decisions that make the visit easier.

  • Carry a torch and an extra warm layer for a sunrise start
  • Start descending before afternoon cloud
  • Wear shoes with grip; the top is loose and exposed
  • Do not push on if cloud or wind builds

The final section is steep and exposed, with loose ground and strong wind, and there is no seating or shelter near the summit. It is not advisable for anyone with heart or breathing issues, poor balance or knee trouble. Tungnath itself is a perfectly good turning point.
Tickets and access
There is no ticket for the summit itself, but the route runs through a protected forest area and rules, group limits or fees can apply; check at Chopta. Winter snow can close or change the route.
