The short answer

Gass Forest Museum: what visitors should know first

Yes, for an hour or so of quiet, especially on a hot or wet day. Expect a small, old-fashioned museum rather than a modern one, and check opening days before you go.

History and context

The story behind Gass Forest Museum

The museum was established by Horace Archibald Gass, Conservator of Forests for the Coimbatore circle, and opened on 15 April 1902 by Lord Ampthill, then Governor of Madras. After Gass retired in 1905, his successor F. A. Lodge named it in his honour. A purpose-built building followed in 1906.

The Madras Forestry College, now the Tamil Nadu Forest Academy, was set up on the grounds in 1912. From 1942 to 1947 the buildings sheltered wartime evacuees. The museum is now run by the Institute of Forest Genetics and Tree Breeding, and reopened to the public on 1 May 2015 after renovation.

Why it matters

Why Gass Forest Museum is worth your time

The museum shows how forestry was understood in colonial India, and it holds specimens and records that are hard to see elsewhere. For visitors who plan to go to the Anamalai or Nilgiri hills, it is a helpful introduction to the trees and wildlife of the Western Ghats.

It is also a piece of the city's history. The campus has trained foresters since 1912 and, after a period of use as a shelter for wartime evacuees, it reopened to the public in 2015 after renovation. It is a quiet, unhurried place that is easy to fit into a day.

Plan your visit

How to experience it

Visit on a weekday morning, when the campus is quiet. The galleries hold stuffed animals such as a gaur, a chinkara and a leopard, seasoned tree trunks including sandalwood, and a diorama of wildlife in its habitat added during renovation. Read the labels on the timber sections, which explain how foresters used to measure and identify trees.

The museum is part of a larger forestry campus that also houses the Tamil Nadu Forest Academy and the Institute of Forest Genetics and Tree Breeding. The grounds are green and shaded, and make a pleasant walk if the weather allows.

It pairs well with the Gedee Car Museum for a single afternoon of indoor sights, and is a useful stop if rain disrupts your plans for the hills.
