The short answer

Dutch Hospital Shopping Precinct: what visitors should know first

Worth an hour for the building and a meal or tea. Go for lunch or an early evening, wear light clothes, and note that many outlets serve meat and drink, so vegetarians should check menus before sitting down.

History and context

The story behind Dutch Hospital Shopping Precinct

The Old Dutch Hospital dates from the Dutch period in the seventeenth century; sources differ on the exact year, and a Dutch map from 1732 shows it on its present site. It treated Dutch East India Company staff.

It later served as an apothecary and a police station, was left empty after damage in the 1990s, and was restored and reopened in 2011 as a shopping and dining precinct.

Why it matters

Why Dutch Hospital Shopping Precinct is worth your time

The hospital was built by the Dutch in the late seventeenth century to serve staff of the Dutch East India Company, and it stands in what is now Colombo Fort. Under British rule it declined, later housing an apothecary and then a police station, before being abandoned in the 1990s and renovated, reopening in 2011.

What makes it useful for a visitor is that it has been reused rather than turned into a museum. You can see how Dutch builders handled the climate, with thick walls, verandahs and courtyards, while sitting in a modern cafe. It is a gentle introduction to the colonial layers of the city before heading to Pettah.

Plan your visit

How to experience it

Come in the late morning, when the precinct is calm, and walk the arcades round the two courtyards before you choose a table. The building has five wings around the courtyards, with thick walls, wide verandahs and high roofs that kept the tropical heat out. Look up at the timber and tile work, and notice the old stone floors.

Choose carefully when eating. Many outlets serve seafood and meat, and some focus on drinks, so vegetarians should ask before ordering. Tea rooms and cafes are the safer choice, and several offer vegetarian options. Check ingredients such as fish stock or egg if you follow a strict diet.

After your meal, walk to the nearby waterfront and Galle Face, or spend a few minutes browsing the shops for tea, spices, spa products and souvenirs. Weekend evenings are lively, so visit by day if you want quiet.

Plan with confidence

Small decisions that make the visit easier.

  • Visit by day for quiet; evenings can be loud
  • Check menus for vegetarian options and fish stock
  • Reserve for dinner on weekends
  • Combine with the Lotus Tower or Galle Face Green
  • Carry water for the walk to and from Fort
