Why it matters

Why Sri Rudra Vegetarian is worth your time

Pettah is a working market district where most eating is done from stalls and small canteens, often with fish or meat in the curries. A clean, air-conditioned vegetarian restaurant with a short menu is a useful thing to find on Main Street.

The review that describes Sri Rudra values it for low prices, cleanliness, plenty of seating and generally good food, and contrasts its short menu with other Indian restaurants that have long, unfamiliar ones. That makes it easy for older travellers to order without a lot of explanation. We have not tagged it Pure Veg, as the source says vegetarian without addressing egg.

Plan your visit

How to experience it

Start with the onion dosa, which the reviewers called the highlight: soft, filled with chopped onion and with a pleasant tang and sweetness, served with curries on the side. The mushroom soup was described as creamy and comforting, and the masala chai as strong with ginger and milk.

The menu is organised into soups, lunch, dinner and drinks, each with about five to ten items, so it is easy to follow. Reviewers were less taken with the ulundu vadai, which they found tough, and the curd rice, which was a large portion and closer to milk rice than the tangy version they expected. Skip the chocolate milkshake, which they found too milky and cocoa-heavy.

Service was quick and unobtrusive. Because you can see the kitchen from the dining area, it is easy to point at what looks good. Share a dosa, a soup and a curd rice between two or three people rather than ordering a full plate each.
