Why it matters
Why Brahmagiri Wildlife Sanctuary is worth your time
Brahmagiri was declared a wildlife sanctuary on 5 June 1974 and covers about 181 sq km of the Western Ghats in Kodagu, next to the Kannur and Wayanad districts of Kerala. It takes its name from Brahmagiri Peak, the highest point of the range.
The mix of rain forest, shola grassland and bamboo supports elephants, gaur, tigers, sloth bears, pangolins, lion-tailed macaques and rare birds such as the Malabar trogon. For visitors to Coorg it is the clearest alternative to the coffee estates and viewpoints: an actual forest, walked on foot.

Plan your visit
How to experience it
Start by deciding what kind of day you want. The sanctuary lies in Kodagu's far south, along the Brahmagiri range that runs to the Kerala border, and the usual way in is through the village of Irupu, with the forest range office at Srimangala nearby. Arrange permission in advance, because trekking here is controlled by the forest department and an escort may be required.
The forest is evergreen and semi-evergreen, opening into shola grassland on the upper ridges and bamboo on the lower slopes. Elephants, gaur and sloth bears live here, along with lion-tailed macaques and many birds, but most walkers see only signs of them. Start early, carry water and food, wear shoes with grip, and keep leech socks handy in the wet months.
If you do not plan to trek, pair the stop with Irupu Falls on the same road, which is a short walk from the parking area. Do not stray from permitted paths, and carry all rubbish out with you.
