Plan 01

1 day in Coron

  1. 01

Day 1: Lakes and lagoons by boat

Book a boat tour the evening before and ask for the lakes first, while the heat is lower. Typical routes combine Kayangan Lake, a lagoon stop and a beach lunch, with a snorkelling break near the wrecks or reefs. Carry cash for entry fees, a hat and reef-safe sun protection. Return by mid-afternoon, rest, and eat an early dinner in town.

    StopTime neededWalkingBest time
Kayangan LakeAbout 1 to 2 hours including the walk and a swimDemandingEarly morning or late afternoon, to avoid the busiest tour hours; dry months December to April

Pace: Kayangan Lake involves a lot of walking or steps — do it early, and keep the rest of the day light.

With parents at Kayangan Lake: Boarding is from a small landing and the path includes steep rock steps up to a viewpoint and down to the water. There is little seating and the humidity is high. Older travellers who are unsteady may prefer to enjoy the view from the landing or choose Twin Lagoon or a beach stop instead.

Plan 02

2 days in Coron

  1. 01

Day 1: Kayangan Lake and Twin Lagoon

Take a private or small-group bangka to Kayangan Lake and Twin Lagoon. Add Banol Beach or another quiet beach for lunch and a swim. Check the tide for Twin Lagoon, since passage through the rock opening depends on it.

Older travellers who are unsteady may prefer to enjoy the view from the landing or choose Twin Lagoon or a beach stop instead.

With parents at Twin Lagoon: You step from the boat onto a platform and swim or kayak. Rocks and a narrow opening make it tricky for unsteady walkers. A life jacket and a calm operator help, and older travellers can stay at the viewing platform.

  2. 02

Day 2: Town and a gentler sea day

Spend the morning at Siete Pecados for easy snorkelling, or visit Maquinit hot spring. Rest through the afternoon. If energy allows, climb Mount Tapyas for sunset, or view the town from the bay instead.

    StopTime neededWalkingBest time
Maquinit Hot SpringAbout 1 to 1.5 hoursEasyLate afternoon or evening; avoid the midday heat
Mount TapyasAbout 1 to 1.5 hours including restDemandingLate afternoon for the sunset, December to April

Pace: Mount Tapyas involves a lot of walking or steps — do it early, and keep the rest of the day light.

With parents at Mount Tapyas: The climb has many steps, with only a few places to rest. Heat and humidity make it harder in the afternoon. If you cannot climb, enjoy the sunset from the waterfront or from a boat.

Plan 03

3 days in Coron

  1. 01

Day 1: Kayangan Lake and Twin Lagoon

Start with the lakes by boat, with a beach lunch and a short swim. Keep the evening free.

    Day 2: Wrecks and reefs

Divers can book a wreck dive day; non-divers can snorkel the shallower sites with a licensed guide, or visit Barracuda Lake if fit and comfortable in open water. Return early to rest.

    StopTime neededWalkingBest time
Barracuda LakeAbout 1 to 1.5 hoursModerateMid-morning on a calm day, December to April

Pace: Moderate walking today — plan a sit-down break between stops.

With parents at Barracuda Lake: Boarding and walking are easier than Kayangan, but there is rock around the entrance, no easy seating, and a swim in a lake with no shallow area. Non-swimmers may prefer to stay on the platform.

  3. 03

    Day 3: A farther island

Choose one: Malcapuya for white sand, Culion for its leprosy museum, or Calauit Safari Park. Each is a long boat day, so a private boat and early start help. Spend the last evening at the waterfront.

    StopTime neededWalkingBest time

Pace: Moderate walking today — plan a sit-down break between stops.

With parents at Calauit Safari Park: The journey is long, and the park involves walking and vehicle time in heat. There is little shade, so older travellers should carry water and a hat.

Guides for the stops on these routes

Pacing

Pacing a Coron trip for parents and children

  • Hire a private boat for parents. Shared tours run to a fixed clock, with steps up from the boat into shallow water and little shade.
  • Skip the climb at Mount Tapyas if knees or heat are a concern. The town is easy to see from the water and the waterfront.
  • Kayangan Lake involves steep rock steps and a viewpoint climb. Ask your operator for current details and go early or late in the day.
  • Carry insurance that covers boat transfers and medical evacuation. The nearest large hospitals are in Puerto Princesa or Manila, and an air transfer can be costly.
  • Bring enough regular medicines for the whole trip plus a few spare days, and keep them dry in a sealed bag.
  • Avoid June to September if you can. Heavy rain can cancel boats and rough seas are unpleasant for older passengers.
