Why it matters

Why Odisha State Maritime Museum is worth your time

Odisha's coast was a base for traders who sailed to Bali, Java, Sumatra and Borneo, and Cuttack's annual Bali Jatra remembers those voyages. This museum puts that history in a proper setting, using the workshop site where wooden boats were once built, rather than a generic gallery.

It also shows how a neglected industrial site can be reused. Restoration work began in 2007 and the museum opened to the public in 2017 according to the Incredible India listing. For visitors it gives context that is otherwise missing from Cuttack: trade, river craft and a sense of the Mahanadi as a working waterway.

Plan your visit

How to experience it

The museum sits on the grounds of a Maritime Engineering Workshop set up by the British in 1869 to build and repair vessels for the waters of Bihar, Bengal and Odisha. Start with the introduction gallery, which explains how the site was rescued, and then move through the maritime history, boat building and Jobra workshop galleries, where original tools and mannequins show how the work was done.

The other galleries cover maritime rituals, navigation instruments and scale models of monuments on the Odisha coast. Outdoors, the boat shed holds indigenous craft, and there are lawns, a children's park and an aquarium according to the tourism listing. The museum also has an auditorium for special-effects shows.

Visit before the fair season if you want to understand Bali Jatra; the displays on trade routes to Bali and Southeast Asia explain why the festival exists. It makes a good half-day with the Netaji museum.
