The short answer
Gomti Lake: what visitors should know first
Yes, as a gentle half-hour after darshan. The lake is not a standalone attraction, but it is where the temple legend is anchored and the best place to see the domes. Go in the evening for cooler air and the quietest light.
History and context
The story behind Gomti Lake
Devotional tradition associates the lake with the hiding of the Ranchhodrai image and with the weighing at Tula ka Sthan. These are traditions rather than documented events, and accounts vary in detail. The Ranchhodraiji Temple was later built on the bank, and the main gate faces the water.

Why it matters
Why Gomti Lake is worth your time
A pilgrimage is easier to follow when you know the geography of its story, and in Dakor the lake is the geography. Devotional accounts place the hiding of the Ranchhodrai image here, the weighing against the nose ring on its bank, and the first shrine nearby. The temple was later built on the lake bank so that the shrine and the water remain neighbours.
The lake is also how the temple is experienced as a landscape rather than just a building. Steps, trees and a promenade give pilgrims somewhere to rest, and local families and visitors share the space in the evening. It is not a scenic reserve, so keep expectations calm: it is a working town lake, valued for its associations more than for its wildlife or water quality.

Plan your visit
How to experience it
Walk out of the temple's main gate and cross to the lake bank. The temple overlooks Gomti lake from its raised plinth, and from the promenade you can see the gilded spires, the fort-like walls and the domes together, which is hard to do from inside the complex. Take your time on the upper steps; pilgrims come to sit, wash hands and feet, and look back at the temple.
The lake is tied to the founding story. Tradition says that when priests from Dwarka pursued Bodana to Dakor, the image was hidden in this water. A small weighing spot on the bank, Tula ka Sthan, marks the part of the story where Bodana's wife Gangabai's nose ring is said to have outweighed the image. Read the story before you go and the lakeside will feel much more specific.
If you are travelling with children, a short boat ride, if running, can add some fun. Otherwise, treat the lake as a rest stop: bring water, a hat for midday, and take your shoes off only where others do.
Plan with confidence
Small decisions that make the visit easier.
- Stay on the upper steps if the lower ones are wet
- Carry water and a hat in the middle of the day
- Ask locally about boating before paying for it
- Do not feed or bathe in the water unless you see others doing so and feel it is safe
