Rangiri Dambulla International Stadium: what visitors should know first
Worth planning around only if there is a fixture. The ground is scenic, close to town, and floodlit for day-night games. Check the match schedule and ticket arrangements with Sri Lanka Cricket before you travel.
History and context
The story behind Rangiri Dambulla International Stadium
The ground opened in 2000 and staged its first ODI, Sri Lanka v England, on 23 March 2001. It sat idle for a time because of lease and contractor disputes, and international cricket returned in 2003. Floodlights were installed in 2003 and upgraded in 2016, when the ground hosted its first day-night ODI; LED lighting followed in 2024.
The ground has hosted the first men's T20I played in Dambulla, Sri Lanka v Afghanistan, on 17 February 2024.

Why it matters
Why Rangiri Dambulla International Stadium is worth your time
The stadium is Sri Lanka's first and only international ground in the dry zone. It was built in 167 days on 60 acres leased from the Rangiri Dambulla Temple, funded by the Board of Control for Cricket in Sri Lanka, and hosted its first one-day international in March 2001.
For Indian visitors, it has real cricketing history: Shikhar Dhawan scored 132 not out here in 2017, Sourav Ganguly reached 10,000 ODI runs on this ground in 2005, and India have played here. It is also home to the Dambulla Sixers franchise and to Sri Lanka's men's, women's and age-group teams.

Plan your visit
How to experience it
Check the fixture list before you plan your stay, because the ground is only open to the public for matches. Sri Lanka Cricket publishes schedules, and Dambulla has hosted men's and women's internationals and franchise games including the Lanka Premier League. Once you have a date, book transport back to your hotel, since demand for transport is likely to be high after play.
On match day, arrive early to clear security and find your seat. Day games are hot and exposed, so wear a hat, use sunscreen and carry water. Day-night games are more comfortable for older visitors, and the floodlights, upgraded in recent years, mean evening matches run well.
The ground sits close to the rock, so even if you cannot get tickets you can see it from the road. It makes a good counterpoint to a day of temples for cricket-loving families.
