The short answer
Chandradhari Museum: what visitors should know first
A good, calm indoor stop of about an hour. Entry has been free, and it suits hot or rainy days, though display labels and conditions can be modest.
History and context
The story behind Chandradhari Museum
The state government established the museum on 7 December 1957 as the Mithila Museum, initially on the eastern bank of Mansarowar Lake. It was renamed after Babu Chandradhari Singh, a landowner from Madhubani whose family donated much of the collection, and moved to its present building in 1974.

Why it matters
Why Chandradhari Museum is worth your time
It is Darbhanga's best chance to see Mithila-region art and craft in one place. The collection grew from donations by the family of Babu Chandradhari Singh, and the museum itself began as the Mithila Museum in 1957 before taking his name.
For travellers heading for Madhubani or Kusheshwar Asthan, an hour here supplies context: images, textiles and painting traditions that shaped the region before roads and universities arrived. Entry has been free, so it costs only time.

Plan your visit
How to experience it
Start on the ground floor and work through the galleries at an unhurried pace. The collection is broad rather than famous: painted narratives of Krishna and the Ramayana, brass and stone images from Indian, Nepali and Tibetan traditions, glassware, weaving, gems and stones.
Pick two or three galleries rather than trying to see every case. The miniature paintings and the sculpture rooms are the most rewarding, and the natural-history section can be a good break for children.
Go in the morning after the street heat builds, spend an hour or so inside and then visit the nearby Maharaja Laxmeshwar Singh Museum on the same lake. Labelling can be thin, so a local guide or a little reading beforehand helps.
