Deeg is a modest town in eastern Rajasthan with an unusually refined palace. In the early 18th century, Maharaja Badan Singh, founder of the Bharatpur line, made it a stronghold and began a garden palace beside two reservoirs. His son Suraj Mal expanded it and had a fort built around it, and the result is a compound where water is the main architecture.
The sights are close together and compact. Deeg Palace is the heart of any visit, with Gopal Bhawan facing Gopal Sagar, the twin Sawan and Bhadon pavilions, the open monsoon pavilion of Keshav Bhawan and the marble Suraj Bhawan. The fort and its moat wrap around the palace area, though they are rougher and less maintained. Most people see everything in half a day.
The fountains are the one thing to plan around. Accounts agree that they run only on special occasions, notably the Braj Holi season and a fair around Bhadon Amavasya, because water is limited. On an ordinary day the canals are dry, but the gardens, pavilions and calm are still worth the trip.
Deeg is easiest as a day trip from Bharatpur, which is about 35 km away, or on the road between Agra, Mathura and Alwar. It works well for parents and older travellers if you choose a cool morning, keep the walking short and have a car at the gate.
