The short answer
Clock Tower (Ghanta Ghar): what visitors should know first
A ten-minute landmark stop, best combined with Paltan Bazaar and a meal. Do not make a special trip for the tower alone; it is a hub for traffic and shopping rather than a monument with an interior.
History and context
The story behind Clock Tower (Ghanta Ghar)
Dehradun's six-faced Clock Tower was built between 1948 and 1953. Sarojini Naidu laid the foundation stone, and Lal Bahadur Shastri, then Railways Minister, is recorded as inaugurating it. The tower is named after Lala Balbir Singh Bahadur, a local resident, and is sometimes called the Balbir Tower.
Some listings describe it as a war memorial, but I could not verify that, and sources disagree on whether the original clocks still work. Do not confuse it with the Landour clock tower in Mussoorie, which is a different structure.

Why it matters
Why Clock Tower (Ghanta Ghar) is worth your time
The tower is a civic marker. Dehradun has few monumental squares, so this junction serves as the city's centre point, and distances and directions are often given from it. That role matters more than the architecture, and it explains why every Dehradun visitor passes it at least once.
It also records the city's shift from a colonial town to the capital of a hill state. Built just after independence, it sits between the older bazaar and the later spread of government offices, schools and colleges along Rajpur Road. Pausing here helps you read the layout of the city.

Plan your visit
How to experience it
Use the Clock Tower as a place to orient yourself rather than a sight in its own right. It is a six-faced tower with a hexagonal plan that rises from a busy junction, and from the pavement you can see the faces, the stonework and the traffic that circles it. Take a couple of photographs, then walk into Paltan Bazaar, which starts right beside it.
It works best in the evening, when the shops are open and the lights give the tower more character. In the daytime the traffic noise and crowding dominate. If you are travelling with older relatives, ask the driver to drop you nearby and collect you after you have walked a short stretch of the bazaar.
Sources differ on some details, such as the condition of the clocks and the purpose of the tower, so avoid repeating claims that you cannot verify. What is safe to say is the timing: built between 1948 and 1953, with the foundation stone laid by Sarojini Naidu and the opening associated with Lal Bahadur Shastri.

Small decisions that make the visit easier.
