How to reach Dehradun by air

Jolly Grant Airport (DED) at Doiwala is about 20 to 30 km south-east of the city, roughly 45 to 60 minutes by road depending on traffic. It has a terminal that opened in 2021 and flights to major Indian cities.

How to reach Dehradun by train

Dehradun station (DDN) is the main railhead in the city centre, with trains from Delhi, Lucknow, Kolkata and other cities. Haridwar Junction, about 51 to 54 km away, is a larger alternative with more services.

How to reach Dehradun by road

National Highways 7 and 307 serve the city. The Delhi to Dehradun Expressway, opened in 2025, links it with Delhi, and the Inter State Bus Terminal handles intercity buses. Rishikesh is about 45 km away and Haridwar about 51 to 54 km.

Getting around Dehradun

App cabs, autos and shared vehicles work in the city, but traffic is heavy around the Clock Tower and Rajpur Road. A car and driver is easiest for Robber's Cave, Sahastradhara and the Mussoorie road.

For parents and senior travellers

Easy transfers to and in Dehradun

  • Hire a car and driver for the day rather than relying on autos, and ask the driver to wait near crowded areas such as the Clock Tower.
  • Carry layers in December and January, when mornings and nights are cold, and water and a hat in May and June.
  • Ask the airline or railway for wheelchair or porter assistance when you book, not on the day.
  • Pre-book the pickup from the airport or station, so nobody has to negotiate with drivers after a long journey.
  • Choose arrivals in daylight where you can, and keep the first afternoon free to rest.
