The short answer
Okhla Bird Sanctuary: what visitors should know first
Go in winter, early morning, if you want easy birding close to Delhi. Facilities are limited and fees and hours are reported inconsistently, so check ahead. Metro access makes it simple, but do not expect Sultanpur's tranquillity.
History and context
The story behind Okhla Bird Sanctuary
The Okhla Bird Sanctuary was established in 1990 under the Wildlife Protection Act, 1972, on the reservoir created by the Okhla barrage across the Yamuna. It covers roughly 3.5 to 4 square kilometres and lies in Gautam Buddh Nagar district.
The sanctuary has records of over 300 bird species, and migratory birds peak in the winter months. Bird numbers have declined in recent years, which is a concern for conservationists.

Why it matters
Why Okhla Bird Sanctuary is worth your time
Okhla is a rare piece of wetland on the Yamuna at the edge of Delhi and Noida. It was notified as a sanctuary in 1990 and has recorded hundreds of bird species, with large numbers of migratory birds in winter, although numbers have declined in recent years.
For city dwellers it is the closest regular birding spot to central Delhi, accessible by Metro. It also shows how much wildlife survives in a heavily built-up river corridor, and how fragile that is.

Plan your visit
How to experience it
Arrive early, ideally within an hour of opening, when birds are most active and the light is soft. The nearest Delhi Metro station is Okhla Bird Sanctuary on the Magenta Line; from there you reach the sanctuary entrance by a short ride or walk. Pay at the counter, then follow the paths along the barrage and the lake.
A wooden walkway lets you scan the water and reeds without stepping into the marsh. In winter the sanctuary hosts large numbers of migratory waterfowl alongside herons, kingfishers and raptors. Bring binoculars, a long lens if you have one, and layers for the cold.
Expect some noise from nearby roads and bridges. Keep your visit to a couple of hours and combine it with a calmer reserve such as Sultanpur if you want a full birding day. Food and shade are limited.
Plan with confidence
Small decisions that make the visit easier.
