The short answer

Devgad Fort: what visitors should know first

Worth an hour if you are in Devgad town. The fort is compact and easy, with ramparts, bastions and sea views, but it is far less dramatic than Vijaydurg. Some enclosures are restricted, so ask before you photograph.

History and context

The story behind Devgad Fort

The first firm record is a 1713 agreement between Kanhoji Angre and Chhatrapati Shahu that gave Angre possession; Angre is credited with building it, though the exact origins are uncertain. Another account names Dattajirao Angre as builder in 1729.

The East India Company officer Walter Brown attacked the fort in 1720 with the help of the Wadikar Sawants and was defeated. A British detachment took the fort in April 1818.

Why it matters

Why Devgad Fort is worth your time

Devgad Fort is the town's namesake and shows how small harbours were fortified along the Konkan coast. It is a modest monument beside Vijaydurg but is useful for understanding the port that made Devgad important.

The fort is also tied to the Angre family, who dominated the western sea route in the 18th century. A short visit adds the north end of the coast to a trip that otherwise focuses on Vijaydurg and Kunkeshwar.

How to experience it

Devgad Fort sits on a headland just off the town, joined to the mainland by a narrow neck of land. Park near the first gate, which is about 1.5 km from the bus stand, and walk in through the Gomukhi gate. The ramparts are built of laterite, and several bastions are still in good shape.

Inside, look for the Ganesh temple near the third gate, a square well that is still in use and a rock-cut cistern. A few cannons remain on the bastions. The old port lies below the fort, and part of the headland is occupied by the port department, so some areas are off-limits.

A full round can take around three hours if you walk every bastion, but an hour is enough for a first look. Add the Devgad beach, which can be seen from the road on the fort's left, and the harbour below for a short half-day.

Plan with confidence
