Plan 01

1 day in Dharamshala

  1. 01

Day 1: McLeod Ganj monasteries and market

Start with breakfast at a café on Temple Road, then walk to the Tsuglagkhang Complex to see the main temple and the Tibet Museum; time your visit to catch the afternoon prayers if possible. Walk downhill through the narrow bazaar lanes to Kotwali Bazaar, stopping at a bookshop or prayer flag shop. Have lunch at a local restaurant. In the afternoon, rest at your hotel or visit the quieter Bhagsu Nath Temple with its sacred pools if you have energy. Finish with an evening walk around the main square, warming yourself with Tibetan butter tea.

Pacing

Make the plan work for everyone

  • McLeod Ganj's lanes are steep and often narrow; wear comfortable, non-slip shoes. Consider taking a taxi to the main square rather than walking uphill from lower areas if you are not a keen walker.
  • The altitude (1,830 m at McLeod Ganj) can cause mild breathlessness in those not accustomed to it. Ascend slowly, rest on arrival, and stay hydrated. Consult a doctor beforehand if you have heart or lung conditions.
  • Book a hotel with a lift, or one close to the main square so you don't face long climbs. Many guesthouses are charmingly rustic but involve stairs; call ahead to confirm access.
  • Plan mornings for sightseeing, rest through midday, and gentle walks in late afternoon. The town has less relentless energy than other hill stations, which suits a slower pace.
  • Tsuglagkhang and Bhagsu Nath temples involve some stairs and uneven ground; the Library of Tibetan Works and Archives is more level. Forsyth Ganj's St John's Church is a quiet walk through peaceful forest.
  • Hire a car and driver for day trips to Kangra Fort or Palampur; it removes the stress of navigating and provides a cool rest space between sights.
