The short answer
Kareri Lake Trek: what visitors should know first
Go for a quieter alternative to Triund with a lake at the end. Allow two days from Kareri village, with a night at the Reoti campsite. The trail is long and has steep, rocky sections near the top. Not for anyone with heart, lung or knee problems.

Why it matters
Why Kareri Lake Trek is worth your time
Kareri gives a full Dhauladhar experience, forest, river and high lake, without the crowds of Triund. It also passes through country still used by Gaddi shepherds, who move flocks up these slopes in summer.
The lake drains through the Nyund stream, which eventually flows into the Pong Dam reservoir on the Beas. Keep the shore clean, camp away from the water's edge, and treat the hilltop temple as the working shrine it is for local villagers.

Plan your visit
How to experience it
The walk starts at Kareri village, a Gaddi settlement reached by road from Dharamshala. The trail follows the Nyund stream through forest for the first few kilometres, crosses it near Reoti, and then climbs more steeply. Most people camp at Reoti on the first night.
On day two the path continues up the valley to Kareri Lake, at about 2,934 m (9,626 ft). The lake is shallow and clear, fed by snowmelt, and a small Shiva and Shakti temple stands on a hilltop above it. Walk back to Reoti or all the way down to Kareri village the same day if you started early.
The round trip is roughly 26 km. Avoid the monsoon, when the trail turns slippery and stream crossings become risky. In winter the lake freezes and the route needs snow gear and experience.
Plan with confidence
Small decisions that make the visit easier.
