History and context

The story behind Naldurg Fort

Local legend credits a king named Nala, but Wikipedia says the fort more likely dates to the Western Chalukya period. It later passed to the Bahmani Sultanate, then the Adil Shahi dynasty from 1558, then the Mughals after 1686 and finally the Nizam of Hyderabad.

The dam across the Bori river, with the Pani Mahal within it, is dated to the reign of Ibrahim Adil Shah II, in 1613.

Why it matters

Why Naldurg Fort is worth your time

Naldurg is among the best-preserved Deccan forts in the region. Its black basalt walls, bastions and cannons show how the fort was built around artillery, and the Pani Mahal dam is an unusual combination of palace and water engineering.

It also records shifting power: from Western Chalukya origins to the Bahmanis, the Adil Shahis, the Mughals and finally the Nizam of Hyderabad.

Because it is tied to Tuljapur by road, it also fills out a pilgrimage day with something that is purely about stone, water and landscape. The walls are best read slowly, and the valley setting rewards a morning walk.

Plan your visit

How to experience it

Naldurg stands on a basalt knoll in the valley of the Bori river and is fortified on three sides, with a long wall studded with bastions. Come by car and ask your driver to wait.

Start at the main entrance, with its gateways and the Nagarkhana, then walk along the walls to the bastions. Named bastions include Upli Buruj and Paranda Buruj, where large cannons such as the Hathi Toph and Magar Toph are mounted. The Pani Mahal is built within a dam across the river, linking the fort to the Ranmandala outwork, and dates to 1613.

Visit in the morning, wear sturdy shoes and take water. If the group is tired, the gate and the dam give a good sense of the place in an hour.

Plan with confidence

Small decisions that make the visit easier.
