Why it matters

Why Dholavira Archaeological Museum is worth your time

Ruins show how a city was built; objects show how people lived. The museum's beads, seals, tools and figurines point to skilled crafts and long-distance trade, including links to Mesopotamia and the Oman peninsula according to sources describing the collection.

It is also a rare local museum linked directly to the site where its objects were found. Most Harappan finds from famous digs have been moved to large city museums, so seeing them near where they were made is a real benefit of the journey.

Plan your visit

How to experience it

Visit the museum either first, to see the objects that bring the ruins to life, or at midday when the site outside is too hot to walk. It is small enough to see properly in under an hour.

Look for the everyday items: beads made from semi-precious stone, gold, copper, shell and terracotta, seals and sealings, and a graduated scale made from a charred animal rib. There is a terracotta figure of a unicorn-like animal that the museum treats as an important find, and a chlorite schist vessel that points to trade links with Mesopotamia and western Asia.

Take your time with the labels and compare what you see with what you saw on the ground. The reservoirs and gates make more sense once you know what the people who used them owned and traded.

Plan with confidence

Small decisions that make the visit easier.

  • Check opening days and hours before you travel
  • Visit during midday heat to rest
  • Carry water; options around the site are limited
  • Ask staff before taking photographs of displays
