Why it matters
Why Road to Heaven (Khavda to Dholavira) is worth your time
The road made Dholavira a realistic destination. Previously the journey went the long way round via Bhachau and Rapar, which took many hours; the new link cut the trip to under three hours from the mainland edge.
It is also a landscape experience in itself. You cross the Great Rann on a raised causeway and get a feeling for the isolation that shaped the Harappan city on the island ahead.
Highlights
What not to miss
- 01
Water or salt
Depending on the season, the road crosses water or white salt flats.
- 02
Flamingos
In some seasons flamingos gather in the shallows.
- 03
Sunset drive
The low light across the Rann is the best time for photography.
Plan your visit
How to experience it
Treat it as part of the journey rather than a separate trip. Leave Bhuj early, reach Khavda in the morning and take the 30 km road out to the island while the light is low. Depending on the season, water stretches on both sides or the Rann has dried into white salt pans.
Stop only where it is safe and well off the carriageway. Flamingos can appear in the shallows in some seasons. Do not drive or walk out onto the salt flats; the surface can be unstable and the area is remote.
Coming back, the same road at sunset is just as memorable, but get ahead of the dark: there are no services on the way.
Plan with confidence
Small decisions that make the visit easier.
