Plan 01

1 day in Dindigul

  1. 01

Day 1: Fort morning, biryani lunch

Reach the Dindigul Fort at opening time and climb the rock slowly, stopping at the Abirami Amman temple and the cannon points. Be down before the sun is high. Visit the Kottai Mariamman temple behind the fort, then have a Dindigul biryani lunch. Spend the afternoon resting, or drive out to Thadikombu if energy allows.

Dindigul FortAbout 2 hours, including the climb and the templeDemandingEarly morning from November to February; avoid the midday heat
Kottai Mariamman TempleAbout 30 minutesEasyMorning; festival time in Masi (February to March)

Pace: Dindigul Fort involves a lot of walking or steps — do it early, and keep the rest of the day light.

With parents at Dindigul Fort: The route is a long climb on uneven granite with few places to sit and no lift or ramp to the top. The rock holds heat from mid-morning. Older travellers may prefer to climb only to the first levels or skip the summit.

Fort and Abirami Amman temple in the morning, Kottai Mariamman temple, then a long lunch and rest. Walk the old market streets in the evening.

    Day 2: Hills and Thadikombu

Take a cab to Sirumalai in the morning for the hairpin-bend drive and views back to the fort, then return via the Thadikombu Soundararaja Perumal temple on the Karur road.

3 days in Dindigul

  1. 01

    Day 1: Fort and town

Rock fort, Abirami Amman temple, Kottai Mariamman temple and biryani.

  2. 02

    Day 2: Sirumalai and Thadikombu

Hill drive in the morning, temple in the afternoon, early night.

  3. 03

    Day 3: Palani or Kadavur

Either a temple day at Palani, about an hour and a half by road, or a wildlife outing to the Kadavur Slender Loris Sanctuary, arranged through the forest department before you leave.

    StopTime neededWalkingBest time
Kadavur Slender Loris SanctuaryA full day if arrangedModerateDry months, with prior permission

Pace: Moderate walking today — plan a sit-down break between stops.

With parents at Kadavur Slender Loris Sanctuary: There are no published visitor facilities, seating or services. Roads may be rough, and the lorises are nocturnal and rarely seen. It is not suited to people who need easy access.

Pacing

Pacing a Dindigul trip for parents and children

  • Climb the Dindigul Fort at opening time; the granite gets hot by mid-morning and the steps are uneven. Take water and stop often.
  • The fort has no lift or ramp to the summit. If the climb is too much, the Kottai Mariamman temple behind it is level and easy.
  • Book a driver for Sirumalai and Thadikombu rather than relying on buses; the hill road has 18 hairpin bends and some people feel unwell on it.
  • Choose ground-floor or lift-served rooms; many town hotels are older buildings.
  • Dindigul biryani is spicy; ask for less heat if you are unsure, and eat early to avoid rush hours.
  • Heat: March to August is hot and the fort is bare rock. Start at opening time and be down by late morning.
