Why it matters
Why Sangti Valley is worth your time
Sangti Valley is listed by BirdLife as an Important Bird Area, and the BirdLife factsheet describes it as the only known regular wintering site of the black-necked crane in northeast India until another site was found at Zemithang, with a maximum of six birds recorded. Local Monpa communities consider the bird sacred and call it Thung-thung Karmo.
The cranes' record here is uneven. Reports say none came between 2009 and 2013 because of habitat loss, and a recent account notes new buildings in fields where the birds once fed. For visitors, that makes Sangti a lesson in how fragile the habitat is, as well as a pleasant valley. Treat sightings as a bonus and keep a respectful distance.

Plan your visit
How to experience it
Drive up the valley in the morning, when birdlife is most active and the light is soft. The Sangti River runs along the valley floor, joining the Dirang river near Dirang Dzong, and farmland spreads either side. A sheep-breeding farm stands on the riverbank around 7 km from Dirang, and cranes have historically roosted nearby, according to BirdLife.
Bring binoculars if you have them. Besides cranes, the river and fields support smaller birds such as dippers, and local guides can tell you where recent sightings were. Stop at safe pull-outs and walk along the riverbank, but do not enter fields or disturb birds. Winter visitors should dress warmly, as the valley is exposed and cold.
Make it a slow half-day with a packed lunch or a stop in a riverside camp. Sangti is a place for quiet, not sightseeing checklists, and the experience depends heavily on the season, the weather and luck.
