The short answer
Mount Japfü: what visitors should know first
Only if you want a summit, are fit and can start before dawn with a local guide from Kigwema. Most visitors to Dzukou will not combine the two; viewing the peak from Kigwema is a much gentler way to meet it.

Why it matters
Why Mount Japfü is worth your time
Japfü is the high point of the Barail Range and one of the highest peaks in Nagaland, which makes it the natural summit goal for trekkers based in Kohima. Dzukou Valley lies immediately south of it, so the two form a single landscape, with the valley as the soft lower ground and the peak as the hard upper one.
It also carries a botanical record, the tallest rhododendron tree recorded, and a seasonal snow cap. Those qualities make it interesting even for people who will never climb it, and a reason to treat the forest with the same care that Dzukou demands.

How to experience it
From Kohima, drive about 17 km to Kigwema, where the climb begins. Trekking accounts describe a pre-dawn start, with around five hours of walking to reach the main summit, so go with a local guide and enough warm clothing for a cold, windy top.
The forest on the lower slopes holds rhododendron, and the mountain is known for the tallest rhododendron tree recorded by Guinness World Records, found in 1993 at about 20 m. Do not expect to find it without a guide. Snow can fall on the summit between December and February.
If you are not climbing, stop in Kigwema and look up at the peak from the village; the view alone is worth the short drive from Kohima.
