Why it matters

Why Ella Railway Station is worth your time

Ella station is the hub of the town. Wikipedia says it opened in July 1918 and has a single platform. The railway shaped Ella's growth as a hill-country stop, and the Main Line's passage through the area is the reason the Nine Arch Bridge and other engineering works exist.

For travellers from India, the Sri Lankan railway is a distinct experience: narrow stations, tea country, and colonial-era infrastructure that is still in daily use. It is also the most scenic way to arrive in Ella, although for older travellers a car may be more comfortable. Treat the train as an experience, and plan for delays.

How to experience it

Arrive in good time and find your carriage before the train enters. All Main Line trains stop at Ella, and Wikipedia calls it the 75th station on the line at 271.03 km from Colombo Fort. The platform is short and gets busy at peak times.

If you are travelling up from the highlands to Ella, the ride is a well-known scenic one, with views of tea slopes, tunnels and bridges. Guides recommend reserving a seat in advance, and to keep to the carriage rules, especially near open doors. Journeys are long, often around seven hours from Kandy by the sources we checked, and can run late.

If you are only passing through, sit on a bench for a few minutes and watch a train arrive. It is one of the calmer moments of Ella's day, and a good place to understand the line's role in the town.

Plan with confidence

Small decisions that make the visit easier.

  • Reserve seats in advance
  • Check the official timetable the day before
  • Allow for delays
  • Keep luggage light
  • Stay clear of doors and the platform edge
