Erode is a working city on the Kaveri in the Kongu region of western Tamil Nadu, best known for turmeric and textiles. It is the birthplace of the social reformer Periyar E. V. Ramasamy, a major railway junction, and the base for the surrounding district's temples, dams and wildlife areas. It is not a monument city, and its charm is in its everyday trades and the quiet countryside around it.
The best outings are short. Vellode Bird Sanctuary, a Ramsar wetland about 12-15 km away, is at its best from November to March. Thindal Murugan Temple sits on a small hill on the Perundurai side, while Bhavani and Kodumudi, on the Kaveri, hold older river shrines. Chennimalai, about 24-30 km away, is a handloom town with a hill temple.
Erode district also holds larger wildlife areas, including the Sathyamangalam Tiger Reserve and the newly notified Thanthai Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary, though these are separate outings with their own access rules. Treat Erode as a base for two or three easy days, with mornings for outings and afternoons for rest, because the plains are hot for much of the year.
