The short answer

Aam Khas Bagh: what visitors should know first

Worth about an hour for history lovers and a gentle break from the gurdwaras. The ruins are partly decayed, so expect atmosphere more than polish. Go in the cooler months and check ASI timings before you leave.

History and context

The story behind Aam Khas Bagh

Wikipedia credits the original inn to Akbar's time, with the architect Hafiz Rakhna, and a rebuilding under Shah Jahan on the military road between Delhi and Lahore. Jahangir is credited with later additions including a cooling chamber, hamam and tank. The site is maintained by the Archaeological Survey of India and is partly in poor condition.

Why it matters

Why Aam Khas Bagh is worth your time

The Mughal road between Delhi and Lahore passed through Sirhind, and Aam Khas Bagh was one of the royal rest-houses along it. The site is credited to Akbar's reign and rebuilt in the time of Shah Jahan, with later additions attributed to Jahangir. It is one of the few places where the imperial history of Sirhind is still visible on the ground.

For travellers on a Sikh pilgrimage, it is a useful counterpoint: here is the power of the empire whose governor ordered the deaths of the sahibzadas. Standing in the gardens, you see a very different Sirhind from the one in the gurdwaras.

Old mango, pear and guava trees give welcome shade.

Plan your visit

How to experience it

Enter through the gate and begin with the garden paths before moving to the ruins. The complex was a road-side inn with a public section, the Aam, and a royal section, the Khas, used by emperors travelling between Delhi and Lahore. Look for the Daulat Khana, the royal pavilion, and the remains of the Sard Khana, a cooling chamber that used channelled water.

Wells and conduits fed fountains and tanks in the grounds. The Shahi Hamam is in poor condition, so view it from outside. An orchard of mango, pear and guava, some trees decades old, fills much of the grounds and shades the walk.

A light-and-sound show about Sirhind and the sahibzadas is held at night during the Shaheedi Jor Mela. At other times the garden is quiet and good for a rest. Keep an eye on loose stones and uneven steps.

Plan with confidence

Small decisions that make the visit easier.
