The short answer

Gurdwara Burj Mata Gujri (Thanda Burj): what visitors should know first

Yes, as part of the same visit. It is small and takes under an hour. Go after Gurdwara Fatehgarh Sahib, cover your head and remove shoes, and read a short account first because the place is more about remembrance than architecture.

History and context

The story behind Gurdwara Burj Mata Gujri (Thanda Burj)

Sikh tradition places the confinement of Mata Gujri and the sahibzadas at this tower in December 1705. Sources differ on whether the year is 1704 or 1705. The present shrine has been rebuilt in recent times.

Why it matters

Why Gurdwara Burj Mata Gujri (Thanda Burj) is worth your time

The Thanda Burj sits at the emotional centre of the story told at Fatehgarh Sahib. The family had been separated from Guru Gobind Singh after the evacuation of Anandpur and were handed over to the governor of Sirhind. Mata Gujri, the Guru's mother, kept the boys steady through their confinement.

For travellers, the value is not in the building but in understanding the order of events: confinement here, the court at Sirhind, the entombment where the main gurdwara stands, and the cremation at Jyoti Sarup. Seeing them in sequence is a clearer way to understand why this town matters to Sikhs than any single visit could be.

Plan your visit

How to experience it

Walk over from the main gurdwara or take an auto for a few minutes. The shrine stands on the site where, according to Sikh tradition, Mata Gujri and the two younger sahibzadas were confined in an open tower that was cold in winter, hence Thanda Burj, the cool tower. After shoes and head covering, enter the compound and sit in the sangat for a short while.

The tradition holds that Mata Gujri collapsed on hearing of her grandsons' deaths. You do not need to climb or explore. Most visitors spend time in quiet remembrance and then move on. A local sevadar may offer a short explanation of the sequence of events; listen, but donations are never required.

Pair this with Gurdwara Jyoti Sarup, a short drive away, where the remains of Mata Gujri and the boys were cremated. Together the three sites make a half-day circuit.

Plan with confidence

Visit as a guest, not a spectator.

  • Visit after the main gurdwara so the story is in order
  • Dress modestly and cover your head
  • Ask a sevadar about photography
  • Hydrate beforehand; there is little shade outside the compound
