The short answer

Wadi Wurayah National Park: what visitors should know first

Go only after checking current access rules, which are strict for a protected area. It suits fit travellers on a guided or approved visit, not a casual stop. Most older visitors will find it too demanding.

History and context

Why it matters

Why Wadi Wurayah National Park is worth your time

Wadi Wurayah became the UAE's first protected mountain area on 16 March 2009, after a three-year campaign led by the Emirates Wildlife Society with WWF. It is a Ramsar Wetland of International Importance, designated on 10 July 2010. Wikipedia also records that UNESCO inscribed it as a World Heritage site in 2026.

That matters because permanent fresh water is rare in the Emirates. The wadi supports more than 100 species of mammals, birds, reptiles and amphibians. Visiting responsibly helps keep an ecosystem that is unusual in this part of the Gulf intact.

Plan your visit

How to experience it

Treat Wadi Wurayah as a protected reserve, not a picnic spot. Check access first, as rules for entry, swimming and trails may apply, and go with an approved operator if one is available. Do not enter closed areas, leave litter, or touch wildlife.

The wadi lies in the Hajar Mountains between Masafi, Khor Fakkan and Bidiyah. It is known for a scenic waterfall, streams and pools among rocky outcrops, and for freshwater life that is unusual in the UAE, including a native fish and a rare orchid. Wikipedia also mentions the endangered Arabian tahr and a caracal sighting in October 2025.

Go early, wear sturdy shoes, take more water than you think you need, and keep to marked routes. Even in cooler months, the rock radiates heat by late morning. Consider the nearby Al Hayl Fort or Masafi market for the less strenuous half of the day.

Plan with confidence

Small decisions that make the visit easier.
