History and context

The story behind Navabrahma Temples, Alampur

The temples were sponsored by the Badami Chalukyas between roughly the 7th and 9th centuries; Svarga Brahma is dated to 681-696 CE and an inscription at Bala Brahma is dated 702 CE. Damage from the 14th century onward was followed by the building of a fort, mosque and graveyard among the temples.

Archaeologist Ghulam Yazdani surveyed the site in 1926-27, and the ASI restored the ruins after 1980.

Why it matters

Why Navabrahma Temples, Alampur is worth your time

The Navabrahma group is one of the most important early temple sites in the Deccan. Built under the Badami Chalukyas in the Nagara style, the temples show the formative stage of north Indian temple forms in the south. Inscriptions record a Shaiva monastic centre at Alampur in the early 8th century.

The site also tells a story of loss and survival. The temples were damaged from the 14th century onward, a fort, mosque and graveyard were later built among them, and the Archaeological Survey of India restored the ruins after 1980. The Sangameswara temple, originally at Kudavelly, was moved to higher ground when the Srisailam dam flooded its site.

Plan your visit

How to experience it

The nine temples are called Taraka, Svarga, Padma, Bala, Garuda, Kumara, Arka, Veera and Vishva Brahma. Start at the entrance, where the archaeology museum holds sculpture and inscriptions recovered from the area, and then walk the group in order. Svarga Brahma is the most richly carved, with images including Nataraja, Lingodbhava and Dakshinamurti.

Look at the shapes before the details: each temple has a square plan, a curvilinear tower and a pillared hall in front. Taraka Brahma has a tower with several storeys, and Bala Brahma still has daily worship. Early friezes illustrate Panchatantra stories, which are easy to miss unless you look low on the walls.

Go early or late in the day for better light and fewer people. Combine with the Jogulamba temple a short walk away, and if you have time and energy, the Papanasi group lies a few kilometres away.

Plan with confidence

Small decisions that make the visit easier.
