History and context
The story behind Galle National Museum
The building was constructed in 1656 as a commissariat store, which makes it the oldest remaining Dutch building in Galle Fort according to Wikipedia. It later served as a billiards room for the New Oriental Hotel, now Amangalla.
The museum opened on 31 March 1986, and the China Friendship Gallery was opened on 10 September 2013.

Why it matters
Why Galle National Museum is worth your time
The museum is a good place to see what ordinary colonial objects looked like, beside the fort itself. It shows crafts that are still sold in local shops, so you can use it to judge quality before you shop. The China gallery is a reminder that Galle was a port of call long before the Europeans arrived.
It is small and not a major collection, so manage expectations. For a family with limited time, one museum is enough, and the Maritime Museum has the bigger story.

How to experience it
Go to the museum for the building as much as the objects. It was built in 1656 as a commissariat store for the Dutch garrison and later served as a billiards room for the neighbouring hotel, now Amangalla. The Department of National Museums renovated it, and it opened as a museum on 31 March 1986.
There are three galleries. The first shows local cottage industries such as turtle-shell jewellery, Beeralu lace and wooden mask carving. The second has Dutch-period furniture and weapons. The third, the Sri Lanka China Friendship Gallery, opened in 2013 and covers trade links with China, including the monk Faxian and the admiral Zheng He.
Combine it with the church and the Maritime Museum, within minutes of each other.
