Plan 01
1 day in Gandikota
- 01
Day 1: Fort and gorge
Arrive early so that you walk the fort in the cool hours. Start with the Madhavaraya temple and the Raghunatha Swamy temple, then see the Jama Masjid and the granary, which also gives you a shaded rest. Break through the middle of the day. Return to the gorge viewpoint in the last hour before sunset, keeping well back from unfenced edges.
Stop Time needed Walking Best time Madhavaraya Temple 30–45 minutes Moderate Morning light, October to February Raghunatha Swamy Temple 20–30 minutes Moderate Morning or late afternoon, October to February Jama Masjid 20–30 minutes Easy Morning, October to February Granary 15–20 minutes Easy Any daylight hour; cooler inside than outside Pace: Moderate walking today — plan a sit-down break between stops.
With parents at Madhavaraya Temple: Level courtyards but uneven stone paving and a few steps. There is little seating, and the open compound is hot by late morning, so older visitors should come early.
With parents at Raghunatha Swamy Temple: Rough stone ground and some steps between levels. The gorge outlook is a short walk from the temple but edges are unfenced, so older visitors should stay on the temple side.

Guides for the stops on these routes
Pacing
Pacing a Gandikota trip for parents and children
- Go in the cool hours. The fort plateau has little shade, and from March to June the midday heat is serious.
- Wear shoes with grip. The paths are rocky and uneven.
- Stay on the temple side of the Raghunatha Swamy viewpoint and keep back from unfenced gorge edges.
- Carry water, snacks and any medication; facilities at the monuments are minimal.
- The long road journey is the harder part. Break it with a stop, or stay overnight in Jammalamadugu or at Haritha.
- Use the granary's shaded interior as a midday rest stop.
