Why it matters
Why Chakung Kali Temple is worth your time
Chakung Kali Temple is an important local pilgrimage site for Hindu and Nepali-speaking communities in Gangtok. The goddess Kali, the fierce destroyer of evil, is particularly honoured here. The hilltop location, with views of the entire city below, makes it a place where the divine and the earthly converge, at least for those who come to worship.
For travellers, the temple is less famous than the Buddhist sites but more authentic, as it remains a place of genuine devotion rather than tourism.
Plan your visit
How to experience it
Climb the stone steps through the wooded hillside. The path switchbacks gently, and you can rest at any point. As you climb, the rooftops of Gangtok drop away below and you rise above the treeline into open meadow.
At the top, the small red-painted temple sits on a cleared hilltop, with prayer flags strung from its roof and the Himalayan ridges visible in all directions on clear days. Inside, the sanctum holds an image of Kali, the fierce, protective form of the goddess. Circumambulate the temple clockwise if you wish, as Hindu pilgrims do.
Linger on the hilltop and take in the panorama. On clear mornings you can see Kanchenjunga, the third-highest peak in the world, far to the north. Then descend at leisure.
Plan with confidence
Visit as a guest, not a spectator.
- Wear sturdy shoes; the steps can be slippery after rain
- Take water; there are no vendors on the hill
- Dress modestly, with shoulders and knees covered
- Go early morning for best light and clearest air
- Leave footwear outside the temple
