The short answer
Best areas to stay in Gangtok
- 01
MG Marg and central ridge
Best for: Walkable access to the main market, restaurants and a city pulse
The heart of Gangtok, with hotels ranging from homestays to mid-range chains. It is steep, noisy in the evenings and always busy. Good for younger travellers and those who want to be in the action, but can be tiring for seniors due to the gradient.
- 02
Upper Gangtok (towards Rumtek road)
Best for: Quieter, more spacious stays; closer to Rumtek Monastery
Residential areas with homestays and small hotels. Peaceful and away from the crowds, but you will need a taxi to get everywhere. Good for older travellers seeking rest between monastery visits.
- 03
Lower Gangtok and bazaar area
Best for: Traditional atmosphere and access to old shops
The older, poorer part of the city with very steep lanes, small family guesthouses and the most local feel. Can be less hygienic and very steep; not ideal for older travellers unless very sure-footed.
- 04
Government Hill area
Best for: Pleasant residential setting, proximity to some monasteries
A leafy government residential area with some homestays and small hotels, quieter than MG Marg and with good views. A short taxi ride to the main shops and restaurants.

Before you book
What to check when booking for older travellers
- Ask for a lift, or a ground-floor room — many heritage hotels have steps and no lift.
- Check how far the hotel is from the sights you care about, in minutes by road, not kilometres.
- Prefer free cancellation until close to the date, in case plans or health change.
- Look for 24-hour reception, in-house dining and a doctor-on-call policy.
- Read recent reviews for noise — old-city streets and wedding venues can be loud late.

Comfort notes for Gangtok
- Gangtok is hilly: accept that you will be climbing or descending most of the day. Choose a hotel in central Gangtok (MG Marg area) so you can make short walks rather than long taxi rides between sights.
- The altitude (1,600 m) is mild but real. Take the first day slowly, drink plenty of water, and consider consulting your doctor before coming, especially if you have breathing issues or heart concerns.
- Rumtek Monastery involves a steep drive and then walking up from the car park. You can rest at the top before exploring. Enchey and Kanyeshwara are less demanding and still rewarding.
- MG Marg is steep but walkable in short bursts. Walk down in the evening when it is cooler, and take taxis going uphill.
