The short answer
Gili Trawangan: what visitors should know first
Choose Trawangan if you want the widest choice of food, dive operators, clinics and ATMs, and can tolerate evening noise on the main strip. Stay on the quieter west or north side if you are travelling with older parents, and visit the east-coast strip by day.
History and context
The story behind Gili Trawangan
Wikipedia says permanent settlement of the Gilis began in the 1970s, with coconut plantations started in 1971 and prison labourers helping early harvests. Backpacker tourism arrived in the 1980s, diving grew in the 1990s, and Trawangan later overtook Gili Air as the main tourist island. Fast-boat links from Bali began in 2005.
The islands were hit by the August 2018 Lombok earthquake and escaped the worst damage on Lombok, though structural damage and injuries were reported.

Why it matters
Why Gili Trawangan is worth your time
Trawangan is where most visitors first meet the Gilis, and it is the practical hub: it has the most ATMs, clinics, dive schools and places to eat. If something goes wrong, help is closer here than on Meno or Air, which matters for older travellers and families.
It is also the island with the biggest tourism footprint. Wikipedia notes rapid growth in visitor numbers and the strains that followed, including waste and reef damage. Knowing that helps you choose operators who protect the reef, refill water bottles and avoid single-use plastic.

Plan your visit
How to experience it
Arrive in the morning, when seas are usually calmer, and take a horse cart or walk from the harbour to your stay. The east coast has the harbour strip, beach restaurants, dive centres and bars; this is where most of the island's tourism sits. Wikipedia describes Trawangan as the most developed of the three islands, and also the only one that rises noticeably above sea level.
Walk the loop road on a calm morning before the heat builds; Wikivoyage suggests the circuit takes roughly 90 minutes on foot, so a bicycle or a cart makes it easy to do in sections. The west coast faces the sunset, and the interior is quieter, with homes, plantations and small shops.
After dark the main strip can be loud, and Wikivoyage warns about spiked drinks, locally made arak, and openly sold drugs that carry severe penalties in Indonesia. Families and seniors usually do best with an early dinner, a stay set back from the bars, and an early night.
Plan with confidence
Small decisions that make the visit easier.
- Book accommodation away from the main strip if you want quiet nights
- Carry small notes for carts and warungs
- Do not drink arak or leave drinks unattended
- Carry a refillable bottle; tap water is not drinkable
Know before you go
Timing, access and comfort
- Area
- Westernmost of the three Gilis, off the north-west coast of Lombok
- Time needed
- 2 to 3 nights as a base; a day trip from Bali is tiring
- Best time
- May to October is the drier season; mornings are calmer for boats
- Walking level
- Easy
- Senior comfort
- Flat and compact, but there are no cars: sandy or broken-paved lanes, bicycles and horse carts share the way. The harbour jetty can be busy and boarding small boats needs steady balance. Choose a stay close to the harbour or the main strip.
- Tickets and access
- No entry fee for the island itself. Boat tickets and any harbour or island levies change, so ask your operator what is included and keep small cash for carts and warungs.

Is Gili Trawangan good for seniors?
It can be, with planning. The island is flat and compact, but lanes are sandy and shared with carts and bicycles, and the east-coast strip is noisy at night. Pick a quieter stay and use carts.
Are there cars or motorbikes?
No. Wikipedia says the Gilis have no cars or motorbikes; people use bicycles, horse carts, and a few electric scooters.
Is there a hospital on the island?
Each island has only a simple clinic. Wikivoyage says serious cases go to Lombok or Bali, so travel insurance with evacuation cover matters.
